We have been visiting the Outer Banks for years, and finally had the chance to travel down to Kitty Hawk for a cross fit workout. We always stay in the Corolla / Duck area, which is about 40 minutes North of this Box, and traffic can make it worse. Given this is a vacation spot for so many people, OBX CF is ~80% drop-ins, which makes it a cool experience. It was $15 per day, or $45 for unlimited / week. They had 5-6 time slots each day, starting at 5:30 AM and ending at 6PM. I hit the 8:30 AM, and there were at least 50 people there. They split us into teams of 3 (was interesting trying to find someone who looked like they lifted the same weight!). 3 coaches roamed around, good instruction. Converted warehouse, had a dedicated area for free weight work and separate area for WODs. 4 stars due to the volume of people and chaos...
I hit CBCF with a coworker on my last business trip. Little did I know I'd be greeted at 6 AM with A Fight Gone Bad as the WOD. Ouch. The coach was great and very friendly, introducing us to the crew and making sure we felt at home. We bought t-shirts as there was no fee, and we were welcomed back on any future visits. The space was a lot bigger and brighter than SDCF . . . good for some but I do prefer our more dim lighting and cozy feel.
Highly recommend if you're in OC NJ or Sea Isle. Smaller box than SDCF and a little tight but great coach (Joe) and really friendly members. Great WODs with Rx+, Rx and scaled options. $20 drop in with more affordable options available via punch card.
Test your mettle at 4700 feet! Two locations for this box. West side box is big; East box smaller. 14+ workouts a day between the two. I used the West box. Operative word is BIG so no worries about space (like 10x SandyDog size). Everyone is typically SLC nice. Despite B.I.G. instructors and instruction was solid. Noon WOD's were 25+ people; reports that weekends are 75++ so avoid. All in all I recommend. One star off for not having a dog. This is the high desert; bring lots of water and a canister of reserve O2.
Located west of Wilkes -Barre, in Luzerne, Pa this Box is great! Home away from home.... Great Wods, not as complex as ours at SDCF but still a great sweat. Coaches are top notch and so attentive. Their is new management but my drop in rate has always been 5$.
I travel to Boston a lot on business and stay at a hotel by Fenway Park. This crossfit studio is literally right on the side of Fenway. If you are interested in "dropping in", you go on the site and make a request (usually 24 hours in advance). It is a $30 drop in rate of $50 with a T-shirt. I thought that was high at first, but they limit the class to only 10 people and the training and coaching they give is top notch. Eric is the owner and he is a great guy to deal with.
Several to choose from in the KC area however this was the closest to my hotel downtown and a good pick! Jim the owner and head coach was very personable and attentive. Small box but great people, equipment and coaching. He prefers an e-mail or call to reserve a drop-in spot because of size but it was an overall great experience. I'd definitely recommend this place.
If you get the opportunity to go to Rio de Janeiro, the new appearance of CrossFit boxes across the city now provides the opportunity to compliment beach workouts with CrossFit. The new box in Copacabana, CrossFit Carioca, is a unique experience. It's not a big box for us US folks, but large for Brazil, and it's on a crazy street called Prado Jr. The workouts start at 7 AM and run later into the evening. The owners/trainers Andres and Michelle, are excellent coaches and Michelle's WoDs in particular are HARD. In the morning workouts I had the particular pleasure of realizing there is a fish monger NEXT DOOR. Nothing like thinking you are going to puke from exertion and then inhaling a big breath of fish smell. There is no AC and Rio can be humid. I highly recommend this Brazilian workout experience.
There are several in downtown, some of which had poor reviews. That being said, 213 had good reviews and the programming was really good. I went twice, with one being open gym with coaches on hand to help with form. They are expanding to add a much needed second floor as the space was tight. $20 for drop ins, totally worth it.
The Lincoln Park CrossFit Chicago location is a state of the Art
11,000 sqft facility in a business warehouse park. As you enter the a receptionist who is very easy on the eyes... greets you, and hands you a couple of basic forms to sign. There is no charge for a drop in. I trained with a small friendly group in the 7:30a class and Nicole, The instructor was great, So nice that she was willing to give me a lift after the class was over. You should plan to bring your own speed rope because they do not provide one and if you take a taxi to get their arrange a ride back to your hotel. Following my workout I received a nice follow up email:
"Dear Chad,
Thank you for dropping in to CrossFit Chicago on Wednesday. We love meeting new people and introducing them to our box (which we think is the best in town)!
Feel free to drop in again next time you are in town. Just in case you are here for vacation or a longer business trip, we do have 5 class punch cards available for purchase and have a one year expiration date from the time of purchase.
Thanks again for stopping in!
